Generative Engine Optimization (GEO), Explained

If you read our piece on Answer Engine Optimization, you have already met the idea: getting your business named inside the answers AI tools give people. GEO is the other acronym you keep seeing for almost the same thing. Here is what Generative Engine Optimization actually is, how it differs from AEO and plain SEO, and what really moves it, without the buzzwords.

What Generative Engine Optimization Means

Generative Engine Optimization is the practice of shaping your content and your wider online presence so that generative AI tools, ChatGPT, Google’s AI Overviews, Gemini, Perplexity, and the rest, mention and cite your business when they answer a question.

Traditional SEO works to rank your page in a list of links so someone clicks through. GEO works to get your brand pulled into the answer the AI writes, even when no list of links is ever shown. The target moves from “rank on the page” to “be part of the response.”

GEO vs AEO: Are They Different?

Honestly, barely. The two terms grew up at the same time and describe overlapping work.

The cleanest way to hold them apart: AEO leans toward being the cited answer to a specific question, while GEO leans toward your brand being present and trusted across everything a generative model draws from when it builds a response. AEO is often framed page by page. GEO is often framed brand-wide. In day-to-day practice, the same work serves both. Do not let anyone sell you GEO and AEO as two separate products. It is one effort with two labels.

GEO vs SEO: Is GEO Replacing It?

No. GEO is not replacing SEO, and the “SEO is dead” headlines are selling you something.

Here is the part that gets lost in the hype. Generative engines do not invent their answers out of thin air. They pull from pages they can read, from sources they have reason to trust, and from what the wider web says about a business. Every one of those signals is earned through good SEO and a real reputation. GEO sits on top of SEO. It does not replace the foundation, it depends on it. If your site is thin, slow, or invisible in normal search, the AI has nothing solid to pull you into.

What GEO Leans On That Feels New

If there is one place GEO emphasizes something traditional on-page SEO talks about less, it is this: what the rest of the web says about you.

Generative engines weigh your brand’s footprint across the open web heavily. Mentions on review sites, industry publications, local directories, forums, and yes, places like Reddit, all feed the model’s sense of who you are and whether you are worth citing. So GEO pushes harder on the off-site side: consistent business information everywhere it appears, real reviews, genuine mentions, and citations that all agree on the same facts about your company. On-page clarity gets you readable. Off-site authority gets you trusted.

How Generative Engines Decide Who to Mention

In practice, AI tools tend to favor businesses that:

  • Give a clear, direct answer to the question, early, instead of burying it.
  • Are structured cleanly, with real headings, short paragraphs, and lists a machine can lift.
  • Show consistent information everywhere, your site, your Google Business Profile, your reviews, and your citations all agreeing.
  • Carry genuine authority, real expertise, real reviews, and mentions across the wider web.
  • Use schema markup that states plainly what the page is and who the business is.

What Actually Moves GEO

The practical checklist looks like this:

  1. Answer-first content. Lead with the answer, then explain. Write the way a person actually asks the question.
  2. Clean structure and schema. Clear headings, short paragraphs, lists, FAQ sections, and markup that tells the engines what your content and your business are.
  3. Off-site authority. Reviews, citations, and real mentions across the web that all point to the same, consistent business.
  4. Entity consistency. The same name, address, and details everywhere they appear, so the AI is confident it is talking about you.
  5. Genuinely useful, trustworthy content that earns the right to be referenced.

Look at that list again. There is no item on it that is not also good marketing. Which brings us to the honest part.

The Honest Truth About GEO

Here is what a lot of people selling “GEO services” will not say plainly: getting mentioned by AI comes mostly from doing real SEO, building a real reputation, and structuring your content well, done right. There is no separate switch. The same work that earns you rankings and trust in normal search is the work that earns you mentions in AI answers.

So if someone is pitching GEO as a brand-new product with a separate premium attached, it is fair to ask what they are actually doing that is different from solid SEO and real brand-building. Usually, the honest answer is: this.
